The birthday of Lord Ganesh is on the forth day of the bright fortnight of month Bhaadrapada, therefore it is called 'Ganesh Chaturti'.

a murti of Lord Ganesh is made from fresh clay for that day and installed in one's home.

people are fasting during the day, spending the time in puja and chanting. Veriety of sweets is being offered to Ganesh including Modaka, his favorit sweet (steamed balles of rice flour stuffed with coconut cooked in jaggery syrup). Ganesha Upanishad is chanted.

In some areas of India, the Holiday is continued for ten days, and in the last day the idols are carried in a great ceremoney of chanting and dancing to the sea-shore and immersed in the ocean.
